Term limits for Congress have been a topic of debate for many years. According to Wikipedia, term limits date back to the American Revolution and prior to that, to the democracies and republics of antiquity. The ancient Roman Republic featured a system of elected magistrates who served a single term of one year, with re-election to the same magistracy forbidden for ten years. Many of the founders of the United States were educated in the classics, and quite familiar with rotation in the office during antiquity. The debates of that day reveal a desire to study and profit from the object lessons offered by ancient democracy.
At the federal level, the 22nd Amendment to the United States Constitution limits the president of the United States to two four-year terms. State government offices in some, but not all, states are term-limited, including executive, legislative, and judicial offices 1. However, term limits at the federal level are restricted to the executive branch and some agencies. Judicial appointments at the federal level are made for life, and are not subject to election or to term limits 1.
There have been several proposals over the years to impose term limits on members of Congress. In January 2023, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) introduced an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to impose term limits on members of Congress. The amendment would limit U.S. Senators to two six-year terms and Members of the U.S. House of Representatives to three two-year terms after the date of its enactment 2.
Some proponents argue that term limits would help prevent corruption and ensure that elected officials remain accountable to their constituents 3. Others argue that term limits would deprive voters of their right to choose their representatives freely 4.
When you look at the US Congress throughout history you will find an onslaught of corruption, lies and deceit to the American Public. These poeple need to be help in check and accountable for their actions and time In Service. When you have people spending their lives in Public Office it creates a cesspool of corruption.
Term Limits are needed and should be put in place to keep them in their place. The days of the good ol’ boy network needs to be dismantled and true freedom restored to the American People.
